At this home, we radically reorganised both the living spaces and stairs to completely reorder how the house functioned.
A previous rear extension had created a dark living space, which doubled as a thoroughfare to the garden. This is particularly irritating when trying to catch up on the latest box set! On the first floor, the stairs to the loft conversion had been shoehorned into the landing. Additional space was pinched from the rear bedroom resulting in an awkward diagonal two-step from both stairs.
By replacing the existing rear extension with a double storey partial-extension, we created a private sun-trap to bring daylight back into a revived living space. The goal post design of the lower storey adds a robustness and masculinity to the new ground floor rear elevation. A green-living wall adds calm and delight.
In addition, moving the new stairs over the existing frees up the landing, thus creating a dramatic double height space and returning space back to the rear Master Bedroom.
